Our History
Prior to the early 1900's Boston Harbor was originally located in Boston Harbor Proper near the corner of Main Street and Boston Harbor Road. The school was attended by students living close by. In the early 1920's the school joined with another school that was located on Shore Acres Road, known as Pine Grove School. Originally a log cabin with furniture made of logs, this school was only open a few months out of the year because it was not heated. The community decided to build a bigger school to be used during regular school months on Woodard Bay Road near 66th Ave NE. This School served both areas. The PTA has collected and preserved some of our records from this school and it is the first one we have photographs of. These records contain many names of current Boston Harbor residents and their descendants.
In 1938 the school on Zangle Road was built. It is a product of one of the many Work Progress Administration (W.P.A.)projects during the Roosevelt Era. These projects were the result of "Roosevelt's New Deal", Designed to pull the country out of the Great Depression. The original white building stood alone until the gym and another classroom were added. The brick building was built in approximately 1960. The temporary office was added in 1967 -- to be removed in a few months.
The Boston Harbor School sprang from a community of farmers, shrimpers, and orchard growers. It was originally one room for children of all ages, and grew to one room for each grade level. In fifty years Boston Harbor School has adapted, survived , and always strived to be the best. The dedicated teachers, the parent/teacher unity, and a positive atmosphere have helped produce professionals, business leaders, and committed citizens that are proud to have been part of Boston Harbor School. Since it's beginning, the important aspects of this school have remained virtually unchanged.
For those who have gone before us, we owe our thanks for the values they have protected and the priorities that they set. The education of the children of the Boston Harbor Community has always been, and will always be, one of the most important community concerns. To those ancestors we say -- A Big Thank You!!!
