Dear Boston Harbor Families,
It is hard to believe that next week is October! We have had a fabulous start to our school year and have so enjoyed reconnecting with our returning students and getting to know all of our new students. In addition to academics, your children have been hard at work learning/re-visiting our Bear Basics, which helps us teach the all-important skills of citizenship and kindness. We had a two week “Bruin Academy” where our staff taught our three Bear Basics: Be Kind, Be Responsible and Be a Problem Solver in all areas of the school. All students “graduated” and we have started giving students Bear Paw slips when we see these great skills in action. Once a month, students can use these accumulated Bear Paws to purchase fun items/experiences from the Bear Paw Store. They can also donate their Bear Paws to our office jar to earn an all school reward! We would love for you to also use these terms at home when applicable to reinforce these ideas.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge our amazing staff here at Boston Harbor, inclusive of all the caring, hardworking, talented adults who work in our building. They put all students first in a million different ways and I am so very, very lucky to work with each and every one of them. They reinforce what it means to be hard working, gritty learners and illustrate the “power of yet.” We continually tell students that you may not understand something...yet, because we know that to fail at something or to struggle is just a way to provide more opportunities to learn. It is an important and impressive mindset that all our staff embodies and models for our students.

Finally, thank you a million times over to our PTA for a wonderful start to the year. Our school is so incredibly supported by this fabulous group and all of our families. We could not do what we do without you and the myriad of ways you help us make our school the very best it can be.

I hope everyone has the chance to relax and enjoy the weekend!

All my best,
Jen Brotherton, Principal

Notables Dates & Events
Please be sure to check out the attached Notable Dates & Events document. We will continue to update it as more events get added or changed. A current copy will be posted to the school’s website as well.

Volunteers
Have you completed your volunteer application yet? This process is quick and easy. I am attaching a copy of the instructions. Field trips will be fast approaching and it is required that all chaperones be an approved volunteer.

Grand Slam Book Drive!
Our school will be participating in the Grand Slam Book Drive through South Sound Reading Foundation (SSRF). The drive will run from October 1st – October 31st and a donation box will be available in the school lobby. SSRF donate books to students in the community, many of whom are low-income and do not have access to books in their home.

The school that donates the most books gets a school assembly visit from the Mariner Moose, and the school that collects the most books per student wins an ice cream social with the South Sound Reading Foundation mascot Booker T. Bear, for up to 100 kids!

This year, they are especially in need of beginning readers, easy chapter books, picture books, and any Spanish or bilingual Spanish & English books, but would love donations of any books other than textbooks, encyclopedias, religious books, magazines, or books for adults! These books cannot be counted toward the school’s competing tally, so please avoid donating them if possible.
