Robotics Club
It's time for the Boston Harbor Robotics Club! If you're in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade and you want to learn about robots and coding, you're in luck! The free, after-school club will meet Tuesdays from 3:35-4:45 starting October 16 through Winter Break. (No club meeting during Conference Week.) Mrs. Wilson and a middle school mentor will supervise the club in Room A-4.

We have ten spots for this session but we'll be back at it again in the winter so more kids can join the fun.  Interested? Fill out the application (extras are available on the wall across from the student window/office) and turn it in by Tuesday, October 9. There will be a lottery on October 10 and families will be notified by October 11.  Questions?  Email Beth Wilson ([email protected]). Generously funded by our BHES and broader Boston Harbor community through DonorsChoose.org.

Have you turned in your child’s emergency kit yet? Students at Boston Harbor Elementary School are required to have an emergency kit kept at school in case of an emergency. These kits would only be used if we were stranded at school overnight or longer. Here is the list of items to include in each kit. These non-breakable emergency kit items can be stored in a one-gallon zip lock bag labeled with your child’s first and last name.

___ One bottle of water
___ One box of juice
___ 3 nonperishable foods: choice of granola bars, energy bars, fruit roll-ups
___ Items for child to use: markers or crayons and paper, book, cards
___ Personal family comfort reminder such as family photo or letter
___ One large garbage bag (poncho)

Notables Dates & Events
Please be sure to check out our Notable Dates & Events document. We will continue to update it as more events get added or changed. A current copy will be posted to the school’s website as well.

Our school will be participating in the Grand Slam Book Drive through South Sound Reading Foundation (SSRF). The drive will run from October 1st – October 31st and a donation box will be available in the school lobby. SSRF donate books to students in the community, many of whom are low-income and do not have access to books in their home.

The school that donates the most books gets a school assembly visit from the Mariner Moose, and the school that collects the most books per student wins an ice cream social with the South Sound Reading Foundation mascot Booker T. Bear, for up to 100 kids!

This year, they are especially in need of beginning readers, easy chapter books, picture books, and any Spanish or bilingual Spanish & English books, but would love donations of any books other than textbooks, encyclopedias, religious books, magazines, or books for adults! These books cannot be counted toward the school’s competing tally, so please avoid donating them if possible.

CISPUS Holiday Wreath Fundraiser
OSDEF Cispus Holiday Wreath sales on now! Buy yours at Boston Harbor Elementary to support 5th grade Outdoor Education. From October 5 to November 2, you can pre-order a beautiful wreath for your holiday decor. Your purchase will support overnight outdoor education in the Olympia School District(CISPUS). These make terrific gifts, so remember your neighbors, family and friends. Wreaths are $22 each, with proceeds going to assure funding for overnight environmental studies for our 5th graders, sponsored by the Olympia School District Education Foundation (OSDEF). Wreath delivery will be just prior to Thanksgiving break. 5th grade campers are especially encouraged to sell 4 wreaths each.  Questions? Special bulk orders? Contact Mike or Betty Erdahl. Order form is attached.

Volunteers

Have you completed your volunteer application yet? This process is quick and easy. I am attaching a copy of the instructions. Field trips will be fast approaching and it is required that all chaperones be an approved volunteer.
